2010 - 2014 The Crystal-Ball gamma calorimeter of the LAND collaboration at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH will be replaced by a highly segmented calorimeter CALIFA, which should detect gammas as well as light particles like protons. Investigations on the detector had already started and I joined the group in Munich responsible for the development of its readout electronics.

This involve the development of a new electronics solution which allows for a determination of a logic signal indicating the detection of a particle, the energy deposit by the detected particle and the identification of that particle. The process should be fast and versatile, as the the detector will be used in different conditions at GSI, but should be able to be moved to another facility as well.

We worked on the development of some digital electronics board (Eagle), find solutions for the calibration of the detector, and set up some experiments in order to test our system and algorithms. The chosen electronics is based on a fast sampling ADC coupled with a FPGA, on which we implement the algorithms in VHDL.

Our current task is to write a common technical design report (TDR) for CALIFA (including the electronics) in order to get funding for building the detector.

In parallel, I was in charge of supervising practical lectures at the Tech. Uni. München, and I gave a lecture on simulation at the Summer School for Radiation, Detector and Material research. Following that lecture I developed a new practical lecture on simulation with Geant4 for the students of the university.
  • University Wolfgang Goethe Frankfurt - Post-doctorate

2010 - 2010 Following the work of my PhD thesis, I was in charge of upgrading the readout electronics and software of the Crystal-Ball gamma calorimeter at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH. That included the replacement of the analogue-to-digital converters, and development of a new readout software (C/C++), which was made in the same environment as the one developed during my PhD preparation.
  • GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH - Graduate student

2005 - 2010 My PhD was entitled "Experimental Study of Collective Electric Dipole Mode in Neutron-Rich Nickel Nuclei". It corresponds to the statistical analysis of data recorded during an experiment at the Nuclear Physics facility GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH in Darmstadt, Germany. The investigation was made with different secondary radioactive beams (covering different Ni isotopes) impinging on various targets (Pb, Sn, C, plastic) in order to evaluate the collective dipole response of the projectiles. Indications of the presence of a low-lying dipole strength that cannot be explained by the Giant Dipole Resonance were found in 67-69Ni.

In parallel, I was involved in the preparation and analysis of several experiments at GSI with focusses on Nuclear Structure, Nuclear Reactions or Nuclear Astrophysics.

In particular, I was in charge of the development of a data acquisition readout software for VME analogue-to-digital converters (C/C++). This software was effectively used in various experiments, proving effective, reliable, reasonably fast, simple and modular.
